Key to this is playing with perspective. These points provide that the right illusion of perspective is given:
the isometric camera, meaning the angle of the camera is 0°
The positioning of the camera, in this case being 54.726°/0°/45° (X/Y/Z)
With this you can create the illusion that points on the model that aren’t connected are connected as long as you view it from this angle.

Inspired by the Bush Viper from sub-Saharan Africa, which is characterized by the leaf like scales around its body. The base illusion was made using my Paradox Toolkit addon: Try it for free!
