The medieval chess pieces from the Scottish island of Lewis are among our most popular collections. They give us fascinating insights into the international connections of western Scotland and the growing popularity of chess in medieval Europe.
The eleven chess pieces on display in the Museum of Scotland were part of a large hoard buried on Lewis. The hoard contained 93 gaming pieces in total, including at least four chess sets as well as pieces from other games. The chess pieces were probably made in the late 12th or early 13th century in Norway.

Photogrammetry is a technique used to create 3D models from a series of overlapping photographs. These photographs are taken from different angles around the object. By analyzing the common points in these images, software can triangulate the exact 3D position of each point on the object’s surface, allowing for the creation of an accurate 3D model. When using photogrammetry to model an object, certain shadows and lighting effects are captured within the texture of the object. The textures from the photos retain the shadows and lighting information present when the photographs were taken.
