Full name: White kippah from the house of Szymon Kluger in Oświęcim, Poland Known as a kippah or a yarmulke, it seems to be the most universally recognised symbol of Jewish religiosity and culture. What is the origin of the custom of wearing this small brimless skullcap by Jewish men atop their head? The practice of covering only the crown of one’s head is not rooted in any Biblical or Talmudic precepts. Instead, its foundation lies in the description of the clothes of a high priest (Exodus 28:4, 36-39) or in the traditional headwear of Talmudic scholars in Babylonia. Meleager, Monte Cassino, 1st century A.D., marble. Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek (Copenhagen, Denmark). Made with Metashape from Agisoft.
In Greek mythology, Meleager was a hero venerated in his temenos at Calydon in Aetolia. Meleager was the son of Althaea and the vintner Oeneus and, according to some accounts father of Parthenopeus and Polydora. The hero stands with his dog at his side, holding a spear with which, according to the myth, he has killed the Calydonian boar. The many extant copies show that the statue reproduces a famous Greek work from around 340 B.C.
