The interior of a single-room subterranean air shelter in North Yorkshire. The room is located beneath a small former AA and spotlight installation on the coast. Buildings like this are usually kept shut, but the hatch on this one has been broken open and it is clearly being used for drinking etc now. It’s in a very remote location.

Gunpowder was stored in barrels in a special gunpowder magazine. Just like wine, the barrels had to be turned regularly to avoid the gunpowder stuck together. When used in battle, only a few barrels would be transported to the gun batteries, and gunpowder would be transported to the guns in leather buckets, all for safety reasons, see volume 1 of the “Mémoires d’artillerie” by Surirey de Saint Remy (BnF).
The gunpowder magazine is also surrounded by water and by wooden posts, as additional security measures.
