Por muchos motivos, Hatshepsut es uno de los personajes más fascinantes del antiguo Egipto. Nieta, hija y esposa de faraones, no se conformó con el papel secundario que la sociedad reservaba a las mujeres, sino que asumió ella misma el gobierno de las Dos Tierras a la muerte de su marido, Tutmosis III, y durante la minoría de edad de Tutmosis IV. El impresionante templo aterrazado (y en parte excavado en la roca) que se hizo construir en Deir el Bahari es uno de los muchos monumentos que debemos a su enérgico gobierno.
