3D scan of a Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis), the largest lizard species in the world. The males grow up to 3 m long and weigh 70 kg. The Komodo dragon lives on the island of Komodo and the surrounding Indonesian islands in savannahs and dry forests. This specimen is Number 71 of the NHM Top 100 and can be found in Hall 28 of the Natural History Museum Vienna. It was produced by volcanic activity in the Cretaceous period of the Mesozoic era, formed through the cooling of dacite lava near the surface and subsequent weathering. The thick pillars of stone rising upward and the rocks stretching out almost interminably like a folding screen create an important geological formation of great beauty.
