An ancient Egyptian figurine of a woman with bird-like features and ‘puncture’ decoration. Possibly dating to the Middle Kingdom or Second Intermediate Period, these figurines were previously thought to have fertility connotations, although modern scholarship is moving away from this interpretation. Whilst the exact function of these figurines is unclear, they may have had particular apotropaic and healing associations. Many of these figurines are found broken in a way that suggests ritual destruction.

A sistrum (plural: sistra or Latin sistra; from the Greek σεῖστρον seistron of the same meaning; literally “that which is being shaken”, from σείειν seiein, “to shake”) is a musical instrument of the percussion family, chiefly associated with ancient Egypt. It consists of a handle and a U-shaped metal frame, made of brass or bronze and between 30 and 76 cm in width.
