A traction engine is a steam-powered tractor used to move heavy loads on roads, plough ground or to provide power at a chosen location. The name derives from the Latin tractus, meaning ‘drawn’, since the prime function of any traction engine is to draw a load behind it. They are sometimes called road locomotives to distinguish them from railway locomotives – that is, steam engines that run on rails. They became popular in industrialised countries from around 1850, when the first self-propelled portable steam engines for agricultural use were developed. Production continued well into the early part of the 20th century, when competition from internal combustion engine-powered tractors saw them fall out of favour. Contrairement aux autres portes qui datent de l’époque aghlabide, comme Bab El Gharbi, Bab El Finga est percée avec Bab Jedid et Bab El Jebli au xixe siècle1, plus précisément entre 1892 et 18952, à l’initiative des autorités françaises. Située du côté ouest de la médina, elle se trouvait sous le protectorat français devant la caserne du 4e régiment de tirailleurs tunisiens. Bien que ce n’est pas la traduction du nom arabe de la porte (qui trouve probablement son origine dans la langue italienne), Bab El Finga est connue en français sous le nom de « porte de la potence » ou « porte de la guillotine ».
