Olive Jar Rim #BAH1993-1474. Spanish colonial era ships frequently carried amphora-like earthenware jugs called “olive jars” (botijas in Spanish) to hold wine, oil, & vinegar. These egg-shaped jars were roughly 50 centimeters tall by 30-40 cm in diameter. The St. Johns Wreck, believed to be that of the 1564 galleon Santa Clara, carried at least 130 olive jars; most broke when the ship wrecked – we only know the number by tallying the surviving rims. This rim has an outside diameter of 9.2 cm, and stands 4 cm tall. The book-shrine is held in care of, and displayed by, the National Museum of Ireland, Dublin.
This is a digital reproduction of the shrine as it is now. Weathered by time, dented out of shape, stones missing and the scalloped filigree in the lower sections beaten out of shape.
