Olive Jar Rim #BAH1993-1474. Spanish colonial era ships frequently carried amphora-like earthenware jugs called “olive jars” (botijas in Spanish) to hold wine, oil, & vinegar. These egg-shaped jars were roughly 50 centimeters tall by 30-40 cm in diameter. The St. Johns Wreck, believed to be that of the 1564 galleon Santa Clara, carried at least 130 olive jars; most broke when the ship wrecked – we only know the number by tallying the surviving rims. This rim has an outside diameter of 9.2 cm, and stands 4 cm tall. Built in the Netherlands in 1597, the Roter Lowe (Red Lion) was a versatile 18 gun scouting vessel. Bought in 1601 by the Council of Knigsberg on account of the Elector of Brandenburg. It was in service as a vedette-boat in Pillau from 1602 to 1605 under captain Peter Hintze’s command.
