Hippopotamus figures served as grave goods in the Middle Kingdom and were considered to be a symbol for regeneration in the afterlife. The drawings on the figure depict the habitat of the animal, blooming lotus flowers and lotus buds, a flying bird with wings outstretched, placing the hippopotamus in the middle of a marshy papyrus thicket.

Mask from a complete cartonnage consisting of mask and three breast pieces. Excavated by the Egypt Exploration Society at Abydos. Ancient Egyptian, dating to the Ptolemaic period, 323-30 BC. The gold colouring reflects the ancient Egyptian belief that that god’s skin was made from that material. Other symbols of rebirth after death include the winged scarab beetle, show on the top of the head.

It’s almost a year ago that I uploaded my first ship model, the IJN Fubuki, so I decided to make one of her more advanced sister ships: The IJN Ayanami.
The Ayanami was build for the Imperial Japanese Navy and when introduced into service she was one of the most powerful destroyer in the world.
She sustained critical damage after being shelled by the USS Washington during the second phase of the Battle of Guadalcanal (15 November 1942) and was later scuttled by IJN Uranami.
